Light

Kangaroo Paw Fern needs some light, so don’t hide this indoor plant in dark corners! Medium, indirect light with dappled light will bring out the best in this plant! Avoid it from being in the direct sunlight, especially in the summer months (when the sun’s rays are intense). Exposure to the direct sunlight can cause the leaves to burn. The less light that you give your Kangaroo Paw Fern, the slower it will grow and it might become leggy and thin. If you see this occurring, be sure to immediately relocate your plant to a brighter location. Learn more about what light is right for your indoor plants!

Water

Kangaroo Paw Fern plants need constant moisture. However, don’t let them sit in standing water – you will regret it! Remember to water your Kangaroo Paw Fern. If forgotten to water, you’ll find a dying fern surrounded by a ring of brown, crunchy leaves. Water your plant frequently, but lightly. Instead of soaking it once a week or whenever you water your plants, give them a little bit every few days, or just enough to keep the soil moist but not soggy. If the watering riddle still has you scratching your head, consider planting your Kangaroo Paw Fern into self-watering planters, and don’t forget to fill the planters when it dries out! The onus falls on you to ensure that this plants delicate fronds receive the water it needs to frond on!

Soil

The soil composition is critical when it comes to growing Kangaroo Paw Fern plants! This plant needs a soil medium that retains moisture but still drains excess water to avoid the roots from rotting (not a pretty sight!). Most pre-mixed soils will suffice. Make sure that there is plenty of organic matter, like coco-coir, peat moss or shredded leaves, and avoid soils that contain moisture retaining crystals. If your soil is draining too quickly, we recommend re-potting your plant into a compost-rich soil mixture.

Temperature

Kangaroo Paw Fern plants adapt quickly to most household temperatures. This plant prefers to live in cooler temps but can withstand temperatures into the 90's. It will just need more water and shade during a heatwave. When the temperatures are hot and stagnant, we recommend using a fan to provide good air circulation! Moving air helps keep pests and diseases, and fungus away!

Humidity

Humidity is a M-U-S-T to keep your Kangaroo Paw Fern strong and vigorous! Ideally, your plant will do best when the humidity levels 50% to 80%. This range is helpful to replicating this plants natural habitat. To increase the humidity levels for this plant, you can mist your Kangaroo Paw Fern, give it a humidity tray, or use a humidifier. Additionally, we encourage you to avoid putting your plant in a drafty location where the air is cold and dry. This could create lower humidity levels for your plant. A place like the bathroom or kitchen are both good spots to place your plant if you are looking to increase humidity.

Fertilizer

Feed your Kangaroo Paw Fern with a ¼-diluted complete liquid fertilizer twice a month during the growing season. You can add organic compost, worm castings, or a slow-release fertilizer. Keep in mind that this type of plant is sensitive to being over-fertilized, so always dilute any concentrated fertilizer before applying it! Do not feed during the winter or in the colder months.

Growth Rate

On average, the mature height that Kangaroo Paw Fern can reach is typically a height around 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm). However, it’s important to note that some varieties might grow taller and some might grow shorter. The fronds of this plant can grow to be up to 3 feet (about 90 cm) in length, including the leaf stems.
