Mandarin Spider Plant

A Beginner's Guide to Mandarin Spider Plant Care | All you Need to Grow

Family: Asparagaceae
Common Name: Spider Plant, Variegated Spider Plant
Botanical Name: Chlorophytum comosum ‘Mandarin’

Orange is the new green, and Mandarin Spider Plant is not ashamed to show off its flaming hot stems glowing from under the elongated foliage. Spider plants are easy-to-care-for houseplants known for their ability to remove toxins from the air. They prefer bright, indirect light and well-draining soil. Mandarin Spider Plants can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much direct sun can scorch their leaves. They also prefer to dry out slightly between waterings and can be propagated easily by removing the plantlets that grow on the ends of their long, arching stems and planting them into pots.

Light

Part of what makes the Mandarin Spider Plant so easy to care for, is its adaptability. Chlorophytum comosum can handle low, medium, or bright indirect light. When placed in a dim corner, this plant will grow slowly. If placed in bright indirect light, it will really thrive. You can expect lots of wide arching leaves with plenty of variegation when this plant receives a high dosage of light. Keep the plant clear of direct sunlight which will burn the leaves.

Water

The Mandarin Spider Plant has medium water requirements. Mature Mandarin Spider Plants will develop tuberous roots that are used to store water. This houseplant likes to dry out a bit, so wait until the top few inches of soil are dry before watering.

Soil

Mandarin Spider Plants love loose, nutrient-rich potting soil. Use a soil medium that can retain moisture but also allows for draining excess water to avoid root rot. Most pre-mixed soils will suffice. Make sure that there is plenty of organic matter, like coco-coir, peat moss, or shredded leaves, and avoid soils that contain moisture retaining crystals. If your soil drains too quickly, we recommend re-potting your Mandarin Spider Plant into a compost-rich soil mixture, with less drainage materials. Learn how to create your own universal soil mixture for all of your indoor plants!

Temperature

A Mandarin Spider Plant is native to warm climates and as such, this type of plant thrives in comfortable room temperatures between 60-80°F. Anything below 50°F could be potentially harmful.

Humidity

Mandarin Spider Plants like high humidity and will be right at home in a room with extra dampness in the air, like a kitchen or bathroom. Although, this plant also does well in medium humidity. Dry air may cause the leaves to form brown edges. Placing the plant in an area with slight dampness can help prevent that from happening.

Fertilizer

For your Mandarin Spider Plant, you should use a diluted complete liquid fertilizer during the spring and summer when the plant is growing. Take a break from feeding the houseplant during the colder months.

Growth Rate

Your Mandarin Spider Plant is known to grow at a fast rate, especially when given the proper care. The mature height this plant can reach ranges from about 12 inches to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) tall.
